A warning has been issued after a small number of people in Lancashire are reported to have received bogus calls from a fake bailiff demanding money.
The scam caller demands immediate payment for an offence such as non-declaration of running a business from home.
The victim is also told that they will be charged £700 if they hang up and is threatened with a visit by bailiffs the same day.
The scam is similar to past incidents across Lancashire of bogus callers claiming to be from councils or bailiffs working for councils.
People who receive such a call should hang up immediately and not make any payment. Anyone who is expecting a call about a council debt can contact the relevant council to check if it is genuine.
Report bogus calls and fraud by calling the national Action Fraud line on 0300 123 20 40.
