Rossendale Borough Council has today taken the decision, following discussions with those affected, to halt the introduction of a small scale recycling project for 300 houses in Haslingden.
The project was developed in response to concerns expressed by this community about waste, fly tipping and recycling.
We are now taking a brief pause on the project because we are aware that both the scale and nature of the project has been misunderstood, and this has caused community concern. During this period the Council will be working closely with the community to make sure that the project achieves its intended objective of increasing recycling, making recycling easier, and reducing hot spots of fly tipping.
Director for Business Sarah Davies said, “We are sorry that the project has caused some confusion and better communication could have helped avoid this. It is important to listen to our communities, and this is a demonstration of our commitment to doing this. We want to get to the position where we have a positive and useful solution to benefit everyone and this brief pause will help us do this.”
The aim of our work, and any future work, is always to provide the best service possible for our residents. We work to give them the opportunity and support to recycle effectively in order to manage their waste, help the environment, and keep waste costs low.
We did continue with our organised drop in session at Haslingden Community Link today where we were able to inform those in attendance of our decision to postpone the project in light of the views they had expressed to us.
We are going to organise a range of communication and engagement activities where we to work together with the community on delivering the right equipment and services to help them recycle and keep their neighbourhoods clean and tidy.
To clarify, recycling bins will remain at those properties in Haslingden who were originally leafleted and they will continue to be collected in the usual way, from the back of their property on their Friday recycling collection. All other services across Rossendale were, and remain, unaffected by this project, however the sharing of leaflets received by residents on social media unfortunately gave the impression that a general change was occurring.
