Unsafe taxi taken off the road in Council crackdown

A taxi has been taken off the road in a Council crackdown on unsafe vehicles.

The taxi owner, Mr Madoris Ali, had his hackney carriage proprietors licence revoked by Rossendale Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee for constantly failing to maintain his vehicle in a roadworthy state and it failing its last MOT with a number of dangerous items including brakes and tyres.

Under law a Council may suspend or revoke, or refuse to renew, a vehicle  licence on grounds including a vehicle not being fit for use as a taxi – which was the case here.

The Council’s decision was upheld by magistrates after Mr Madoris appealed.

Work like this is vital in ensuring taxi drivers are meeting safety requirements to protect the health and safety of the public.

Councillor Steve Hughes, chair of Rossendale Council’s Licensing Committee, said:

This example sends out a clear message that we will take action to ensure the safety of taxis that are licensed by the borough.

The majority of taxis are safe and their drivers make sure their vehicles are kept up to standard and that they provide a quality service to their customers.

But we have a vital role in tackling the minority who don’t and we will take whatever action necessary to do so including revoking licences where necessary.
