Council calls for scores on the doors

Rossendale Council is lobbying the government for greater transparency for consumers when purchasing food.

The Council, following a motion at its full meeting in December, is asking the government to make it mandatory for eateries to display food hygiene ratings, as is currently the case in Wales and is soon to be introduced in Northern Ireland.

Food hygiene ratings are awarded to takeaways, restaurants and food outlets following inspections by a local authority.

The food hygiene rating or inspection result given to a business reflects the standards of food hygiene found on the date of inspection.

The Council believes that rating should be prominently displayed so that the public are aware of the level of hygiene and cleanliness for that establishment and are pressing MPs to make this compulsory.
