Civic Pride’s Roger Grimshaw updates on what they have been doing the last couple of weeks and what is happening soon.
The Beast from the East may have delayed our contribution to the Great British Spring Cleanand son of the Beast arrived this weekend but undeterred we’ll be trying again on the weekend of March 24/25. The high winds have made the clean up even more necessary with wheelie bins blown over and open topped litter bins sending their contents scudding across the valley.
Over the last few days, some of our dedicated volunteers have been out on the Rawtenstall spur road between the gyratory and the A56 junction undertaking a particularly nasty litter pick. It’s normal for us to collect about 6 or 8 bags (3000 to 4000 items of litter) from this stretch of road but on this occasion they collected in excess of 20 bags!
Saturday (March 24) we meet at 10am in McDonalds car park from where we will radiate out along the roads leading out of the town centre. Nobody will be asked to do the spur road and all equipment will be supplied (regulars, please bring your own). We’ll finish at noon.
Sunday (March 25) we’re joining forces with our Haslingden group to give the Carrs Industrial Estate a thorough clean. Meet 10am at the corner of St Crispin Way/Flip Road/Bentwood Road for a couple of hours. Last time we did this we collected over 100 bags (hopefully it won’t be so bad this time)! Oh really?
“We need all the help we can get to keep the area as litter free as possible so if you’ve never been before why not wander down, say hello and join our band of happy individuals for a couple of hours as we make the area look good again, ready for Easter! Forget the gym. Enjoy good company, fresh air and a feeling of a job well done.
