Roads to close overnight for completion of Bacup improvements

Work is due to take place overnight to complete the final stages of a scheme to upgrade the centre of Bacup with smart new paving and improved pedestrian crossing facilities.

Some roads around St James Square will be closed to allow them to be resurfaced, and new lines to be painted.

To minimise disruption to businesses and peak-time traffic the work is due to be carried out overnight. It will take up to five nights from Monday 29 October, with roads to be closed from 8pm to 6am.

The closures will centre around St James Square in Bacup, and the approaches on Burnley Road, Yorkshire St, Market St and St James Street.

Diversions will be signed, a map of which can be found below. Traffic management will be in place to allow access for late-night bus services and emergency services.

The work is part of the Townscape Heritage Initiative, which aims to support the regeneration of Bacup by restoring historic features and increasing its appeal to visitors and businesses. Rossendale Borough Council was successful in securing £1.5m from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2013 to deliver the scheme, and Lancashire County Council and Rossendale Borough Council are also contributing to the cost.

The latest phase of the Townscape Heritage Initiative involves pavements in and around St James Square being upgraded with high-quality York Stone, roads resurfaced, and three new zebra crossings being installed. Extra visitor parking and loading bays for businesses is also being introduced.

Some minor works will still need to be completed following the resurfacing, with the whole scheme due to be finished around Friday 9 November.
