Whitworth Town Council is taking part in the international Battle’s Over commemorations to mark 100 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War.

The event on November 11 will start with a lone bugler playing the Last Post at Lobden Golf Club at 6.55pm. A commemorative beacon will then be lit at the top of Brown Wardle Hill at 7pm and the bells at St Bartholomew’s Church will ring out for peace at 7.05pm.

Battle’s Over celebrations will take place across the UK and in counties such as New Zealand, Ireland, Australia, Bermuda, France, Belgium, Canada, USA and Germany.

Other remembrance events taking place in Whitworth include a First World War-themed cafe at St Bartholomew’s Church on November 11 and the sold-out Pack Up Your Troubles celebration at The Riverside Centre on November 10.

A spokesman for the town council said:

Whitworth is proud to be playing a part in this historic international event to commemorate the centenary of the end of the Great War, and to recognise the contribution and sacrifice made by the men and women from our own community.
