Holocaust Memorial Day takes place today and is a chance for people across the world to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, the millions of people killed under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in CambodiaRwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Marking the day, Council leader Alyson Barnes said:

“Today is a day that reminds us where hatred can lead if it remains unchecked.
“The lesson from history and even from recent events shows if you allow hatred and prejudice to take hold and let it fester, it will lead to very dark and deadly places. Eventually it ends in horrific crimes against humanity such as the Holocaust.

“We all have a responsibility to say no to hatred and prejudice and reject it in all its forms.”
