Local food businesses have had training on up-to-date allergy rules.
More than 80 Rossendale food and drink businesses attended the workshops run by Rossendale Borough Council’s Environmental Health Department.
There has been a dramatic increase in allergic diseases in recent years. The aims of the sessions were to give local businesses the confidence when working with food products and serving customers with food allergies.
Businesses attending the course were given information on how to organise their kitchens and prepare food – reducing the risk of cross contamination and how to respond to customers who let them know they have an allergy as well as the processes the business should follow.
Some of the businesses attending included Cissy Greens pie shop in Haslingden, The Ice Dream Experience, Holdren Wood Tea Rooms in Haslingden, The Farmer’s Glory Inn in Haslingden and Ninja Coffee in Bacup.
Jackie Oakes, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Economic Development at Rossendale Borough Council, said:
Allergies can be very serious and even fatal, and it is really important that everyone knows what to do to make it as safe as possible for those with allergies when eating out.
I’m really glad that all these establishments took part in the training and it should give people with allergies confidence when choosing somewhere to eat out in the borough.”
