Statement on funding proposals for St Mary’s Gyratory

Comment from Rossendale Borough Council Leader Councillor Alyson Barnes on the funding proposals to improve traffic and air quality on St Mary’s Way, including the gyratory, in Rawtenstall. The issue will be discussed at a Lancashire County Council Cabinet meeting on Thursday, January 16th.

It is part of the  report on the Proposed Submission to the Department for Transport’s Local Pinch Point Fund.

Vital homes for families in need being developed in Rossendale.

Rossendale Borough Council is buying, repairing and refurbishing three empty properties to be used as affordable supported temporary accommodation.

There is currently no temporary supported accommodation suitable for families in the borough except for one house that the council owns, and there is need for more homes.

These will be used for families who are temporarily homeless due to various circumstances including domestic violence, family breakdown or a negative change in finances.

A new play area is coming to Rising Bridge thanks to a funding boost

The project will involve new play equipment for children aged 0-16 including a zip-wire, new safety surfacing, drainage for the play area and a football pitch and a picnic area, to replace the old and worn play equipment. New pathways will be installed meaning that the Play Area will be accessible to all.

New factory to bring 100 jobs to Rossendale

Work is starting on a new business site to bring 100 jobs to Rossendale

Futures Business Park in Bacup will see the vacant Plot 5, near to Lee Quarry, transformed into the site for an international factory.

The building will be a manufacturing facility for Orthoplastics, which is a world leader in the development and supply of implantable medical devices for the orthopaedic sector, involving musculo-skeletal issues.

Crackdown on rogue landlords

Rossendale Borough Council has used new funding to tackle rogue landlords and illegal practices in private renting.

The Council applied for Rogue Landlord Funding in 2018 from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and were successful in the bid.

The money has been used in a multi-agency approach to clampdown on dodgy practices in the private rented sector, concentrating on making landlords comply with fire safety legislation and meet minimum privately rented standards.

Benefit fraud uncovered in Rossendale

A ‘small minority’ of people in Rossendale have been discovered committing benefit and council tax fraud.

The Council received 168 allegations of fraud from various sources such as anonymous referrals, the Council’s online fraud referral form, and the housing benefit and council tax processing team, in the last year.

This led to 97 cases being referred to the Department for Work and Pensions, with 64 further requests for information made.

Rossendale mum helping to fight ‘period poverty’ given top Council honour

Samara Barnes has been added to the Council’s Roll of Honour for her work in setting up the Red Box Project in Rossendale Schools.

Mum-of-two Samara, from Haslingden, leads the campaign to help schoolgirls who may not be able to afford or access sanitary products – known as Period Poverty.

She is the digital communities manager of the Rossendale branch of the Red Box Project, which takes donations of sanitary products to distribute in schools and community centres for girls who need them.

Taxi driver caught without proper Council licence

A taxi driver has been fined £772 for driving a taxi without a working licence.

Mohammad Iqbal (52), of Burnley Road, Todmorden, was caught driving his vehicle and attempting to ply for hire on South Street, Bacup.

His licence had been revoked in September 2018 as he had previously been disqualified from driving but had failed to inform the licencing department at Rossendale Borough Council, leaving the information off his application form.

Keep cosy this winter with new warmth scheme

Rossendale Borough Council has secured £50,000 to provide Rossendale residents with little or no cost insulation and brand new A-rated boilers.

It may be summer now but it’s never too early to start preparing for the colder weather.

Qualifying residents in Rossendale could receive funding towards the costs of home heating upgrades and insulation measures to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and reduce their fuel bills.

Abandoned cars cost owners £1,000 in fines

Two men have been fined £1,030 each after being found guilty of dumping vehicles on land in Rossendale.

James Carruthers (35), of Moor Park Avenue, Rochdale, was charged with abandoning a Fiat Scudo van on Cherry Crescent, Rawtenstall, and was ordered to pay a £220 fine, £150 legal costs, £435 investigation costs and £225 compensation – a total of £1,030.
