There was a canine theme at Whitworth’s 8th annual family fun day.
The event, on Sunday July 9, saw residents enjoying a variety of entertainment, competitions and refreshments in the glorious sunshine.
Organised by the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee volunteers, attractions on the Riverside car park included ten fun dog show categories with prizes for the scruffiest mutt, ‘waggiest tail’, best fancy dress, best biscuit catcher, best rescue dog and more.
Judges included the RSPCA, Rossendale Responsible Animal Rescue and the Town Council.
Best in Show was awarded to Zara Leech, 7, and her 1 year old Pomeranian Teacup called Ted. The pair won in the Fancy Dress category dressed as Woody and Jessie from Toy Story. Mayor of Whitworth, Councillor Alan Neal, awarded their prize.
Elsewhere entertainment was provided by Samba Dance and Fitness and, continuing the canine theme, Rossendale Responsible Animal Rescue provided a free micro-chipping service.
Councillor David Chorlton, chair of the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee, said everyone had a great day.
He added:
Thanks are offered to everyone who came along and joined in the fun, and to everyone involved in the event’s organisation. Roll on 2018!
RRG Toyota Rochdale supplied a car filled with balloons for a ‘guess the number’ competition. Mrs Carole Pennington was the winner, picking up a £150 Amazon voucher with her guess of 200 balloons.
The Spodden Valley Explorers were also on hand to promote the Spodden Valley Revealed project and offered free family badge making. They also had an archaeological expert on hand to identify people’s local finds.
