Bacup man caught on camera throwing dog waste into River Irwell

A pensioner has been ordered to pay more than £300 after he was recorded disposing of his dog waste in the river six times.

Geoffrey Wright of Lee Road, Bacup, was caught throwing the waste between 12th and 14th October 2018. He has ordered to pay £200 legal costs to Rossendale Borough Council and £133.34 for investigations costs.

Council leader delighted premier mountain biking event returns to borough

Northern Grip, a premier mountain biking festival, which attracts hundreds of people from across the country to the borough, is returning to Rossendale.

Commenting on the news, Councillor Alyson Barnes, leader of the Council, said:

Join fun and historic walk around beautiful Bacup

Invites are open to all to take part in a walk around Bacup on Saturday, 26th January.

The walk will discover why settlers chose this corner of the valley and the social and economic evolution of Bacup to the present day. There will also be a chance to find out more about the Forest of Rossendale, the pack horse routes and much more.

Bacup THI update from the interim chair

Happy New Year everyone. I hope everyone had a safe and peaceful start to 2019.

I am delighted to see a new business has moved into the town as a result of the improvements brought about by the THI funding . The funding has made a real difference to the area and I was really pleased to see lots of positive comments to the before and after pictures our brilliant project officer released on the THI’s Facebook page.

THI Chair welcomes new business to Bacup

After eight months of renovation a historic Bacup building has been given a new lease of life with the opening of Valley Denture Clinic.

Weir residents Kevin and Janet Abbott had been trading in Littleborough, but when they saw the improvements being made to the town centre as part of Bacup Townscape Heritage Initiative, they knew the town was on the up and decided to look for premises nearer to home.

“Disgusting” offenders sought after rotting chicken dumped in Bacup

The hunt is on for culprits as hundreds of rotting chicken legs were found dumped in Bacup.

The chicken legs were discovered dumped off The Sidings in Bacup. Staff cleaning up the waste had to be protected with specialist coveralls to prevent contamination from the rotting chicken.

The clean-up team estimated there were hundreds of chicken legs on the steep banking on Tuesday, November 20th.

Tapestry of River Irwell on display in Bacup on Saturday

A stunning tapestry has created a celebration of the River Irwell and left a lasting legacy of Bacup’s heritage work.

Each of the four pieces weaves together the story of the River Irwell with the history of the Bacup area.

Community Artist Ruth Evans was commissioned to hold a series of workshops to empower local people to create art work which she then combined into the panels.

Popular mountain biking event returns to Rossendale this weekend

A popular free mountain biking event is returning to Rossendale this weekend promising some high octane thrills and spills in the heart of the borough.

The Hope/PMBA Series Enduro Finale is set to take over the Lee Quarry Mountain Bike Trail in Bacup on Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7 from 9-6pm both days.
