Ensuring Homes are Correctly Categorised for Council Tax Purposes

The Council is about to begin its annual initiative to check that all properties currently classified as empty or unoccupied have been correctly categorised. This will include a review of current new builds which are close to completion. There are various classes of empty property which can attract discounts or exemptions and the Council runs a yearly exercise to ensure records are up to date.

Consultation on Policies and Procedures in Relation to Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Vehicles, Drivers and Operators

The Council recognises the need for safe, healthy, convenient, effective and sustainable hackney carriage and private hire services for the travelling public and how they make an important contribution to the local economy and good of the Borough.

Pilot Brownfield Register for Rossendale

Rossendale Borough Council, together with Hyndburn and Pendle Councils, submitted a joint bid to the Government in February 2016 to become a pilot authority to prepare a Brownfield Register. The bid was successful and each authority has compiled a list of sites to be included in its own Brownfield Register.

Environmental Health – Odour from HGV’s

We have been receiving and increased number of complaints regarding odours from HGV’s travelling through the Valley.

These vehicles are carrying material from a commercial composting company in Calderdale. The material is classed as a type of compost and is used by farmers to improve their land. The material is produced under a  Permit from the Environment Agency, the only control on vehicles leaving the site is that they must be covered up before they leave site.

Freedom Parade Comes to Haslingden

Rossendale Borough Council is delighted to officially announce that the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment will be parading through Haslingden next week for the Freedom of Rossendale celebrations.

The Freedom Parade will be taking place in Haslingden on Thursday, July 21st, 2016 to mark the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment Freedom of the Borough of Rossendale.

Stone Theft at Whitworth Memorial Gardens

Rossendale Borough Council and the Police are appealing for information after stone was pinched from Whitworth Memorial Gardens on Sunday 3rd of July 2016.

Around 45 stones were taken by thieves from the gardens and the Council is now having to look at replacing the costly stone.

Rossendale Council’s Head of Operations, Paul McHenry, said;

This is a terrible crime, not only has it left the area looking a mess for the community it is also costly to replace such stone from the public purse.”

Heritage Experts Visit the Bacup THI

On Friday 8th July (2016) the Association of Preservation Trust visited Rossendale for a tour of heritage sites in the areas. Most notably they met with the THI Project Manager Steven Lever and Project Architect Vic Fletcher, from Equilibrium Architects, who gave a tour of the Bacup THI Project to a group of nearly 50 heritage experts and enthusiasts from the Heritage Trust North West.

Police and Crime Panel for Lancashire Independent Member Vacancy

Rossendale Residents and Businesses Benefit from Flood Grant Funds

Since the terrible flooding that hit Rossendale on Boxing Day 2015 residents and businesses have benefited from thousands of pounds worth of grant funding, council tax or business rate relief.

The Council has given 356 £500 grants to those affected, totalling £178k.

13 Rossendale businesses have benefited from a total of £52,200 Business Rate (NNDR) relief.

Council Launches Council Tax Support Scheme Consultation

Rossendale Borough Council has launched a 12 week consultation on its Council Tax Support Scheme for 2017/18.

The consultation comes after Central Government announced a number of welfare changes in its 2015 Summer Budget, some of which apply to the Housing Benefit Scheme.

Rossendale Borough Council’s Council Tax Support Scheme has remained unchanged since April 2013, except for the annual uprating of applicable amounts/premiums keeping it in line with the Housing Benefit Scheme and is formally ratified annually by Full Council.
