Leader’s statement on Black Lives Matter protests

Councillor Alyson Barnes, Leader of the Council, said in a statement:

“We have all been shocked, appalled and outraged by yet another death of a black person in police custody.

“George Floyd’s death and the subsequent largely peaceful protests have shone a light on the racism and hatred experienced by many across the world, sadly including in our own country.

Mayor to remain in post because of coronavirus disruption

The Mayor of Rossendale, Councillor Barbara Ashworth, is to continue in her role because of the disruption caused by COVID-19.

Traditionally the mayor serves for a year before handing over to a new one in an annual ceremony called Mayor Making.

However, Annual Council has been cancelled and Councillor Ashworth will continue for another year.

Advice for businesses re-opening in June

Shops and retail have been told they can open their doors again from next month following closures due to the coronavirus crisis.

The Government set out a timeline and some retail reopened on Monday and further guidance has been published for how to operate safely to protect staff and customers.

Other shops and stores will be able to open from Monday, June 15, again if certain safety measures and checks are met.

Coronavirus testing in Rossendale this week

A temporary mobile testing unit for Coronavirus will be returning this week to Rossendale.

People only need to be tested if they are showing symptoms.

Testing returns to these locations:

  • Marl Pits Leisure Centre on Newchurch Road in Rawtenstall, from Friday 5 June to Sunday 7 June.

The Lancashire Resilience Forum wants people to be aware that appointments are required to attend and people must not just turn up.

Business advice on re-opening – Legionella warning

Many businesses will be re-opening in June following closures introduced to help control the spread of coronavirus.

Some firms are oepn from today, such as outdoor markets and car showrooms, followed by retail on June 15. However, where a building has been vacant or had significantly reduced usage it is likely that the water supply has also been unused and this increases the chances of bacteria forming.

Transformation of the Whitaker takes a step forward

An exciting £1.9million National Lottery-funded transformation of The Whitaker in Rawtenstall will begin in June after local firm B&E Boys was awarded the contract.

The project which includes converting the former barn and stables is being delivered by Rossendale Borough Council in partnership with the Whitaker CIC and is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund with matched funding of £189,950 from the council.

Council receives funding to help reopen its high streets safely

Rossendale Council is set to receive more than £60,000 to help reopen its high streets safely.

Local authorities are to be given funding from the government to put in safety measures to help reopen high streets and commercial sectors.

The leader of the Council has welcomed the funding however has once again highlighted that overall the money from government to cover costs of dealing with COVID-19 is simply not enough.

Council backs fire and water safety plea

Rossendale Council is urging residents to follow Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service advice on wildfires water safety during the hot weather.

Following government announcements that some lockdown rules have been relaxed, LFRS reminded residents of the dangers of wildfires and open swimming.

“The basics in this next phase of lockdown has not changed – stay at home as much as possible but if you do go out make sure you practice social distancing.

Council leader looks forward to further government talks on rail link

The leader of Rossendale Council has welcomed the government’s offer of further talks over restoring a rail link for Rossendale.

Rossendale Council submitted an application to the Restoring Your Railway fund based on its early strategic case for investment for a commuter link between Rossendale and Manchester, with stops along the way at Rawtenstall, Ramsbottom, Bury and Heywood.

The Leader of Rossendale Council has wished a Happy Eid to all those celebrating in the coming days.

The Muslim festival which follows the holy month of Ramadan will take place this coming Sunday.

Usually a time for family gatherings and congregational prayers, this year’s Eid will be very different due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
