Residents encourage to clap for the borough’s key workers

The Leader of Rossendale Council is asking everyone in the borough to take part in a nationwide round of applause for key workers delivering essential services during the coronavirus crisis.

Councillor Alyson Barnes is appealing to residents to join in a gesture of thanks to frontline health and care heroes as well as other workers and volunteers who are delivering essential services by taking part in a mass round of applause from their doorsteps, windows and balconies on Thursday at 8pm.

Sport England announce community emergency fund

Organisations that deliver or enable sport or physical activity in Rossendale can apply to a new fund set up by Sport England in response to the coronavirus emergency.

The £20m Community Emergency Fund is open for bids from local sports, voluntary and community organisations including small charitable trusts for grants between £300 and £10,000.

Fund-raising drive launched as hundreds of  residents are helped thanks to the hub

Rossendale Connected, a new community hub to help Rossendale residents during coronavirus, has taken more than 400 calls since it launched.

The hub, which runs seven days a week, was set-up to  support the communities, families and individuals facing tough times because of the coronavirus outbreak and the stepping up of social distancing and isolation measures.

First business payments out today for Rossendale firms

Rossendale Borough Council has started to send out Government grant payments to local businesses affected by the coronavirus.

Following the package of support announced by the Government for those affected by the restrictions and closures put in place in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Council contacted businesses to promote access to the grant, and received the funds from Government on Wednesday, 1st April in order to pay the grant.

Council moves to protect trees

Rossendale Council has issued a tree preservation order on land at Melba Swintex, Stubbins Vale Mill.

The issuing of the order follows public concern about trees being felled there.

In simple terms, the order stops anyone from cutting down, topping, lopping, uprooting, wilfully damaging or wilfully destroying any of the trees specified without the consent of the Council.

Coronavirus update

Council staff continue to go above and beyond the call of duty to keep providing essential services, support our most vulnerable residents and support our businesses as much as we can through these extremely difficult times for us all.

It also means we have to make tough but necessary decisions.

Sadly, we have had to make the decision, in line with government advice and guidance, and in line with what other councils have done, to close our cemeteries except to funerals.

Local plan hearing on April 2 postponed

A hearing by planning inspectors on the proposed Gypsy and Traveller transit has been postponed.

The public hearing was due to take place on April 2. A new date to hold the hearing is being looked at as well as whether it could be hosted via a video link if it has to be scheduled during the current government lockdown measures.
