CCTV Hub gains top award

Region’s CCTV Hub has been awarded a top security award.

The CCTV hub, based in Blackburn town centre, was awarded the CCTV camera commissioner certificate of compliance.

It was awarded the accolade following an audit by the Security Camera Commissioner (SCC). It shows that the hub works with the Protection of Freedoms Act and the Secretary of State’s “Surveillance Camera Code of Practice”.

Council leader praise after Storm Ciara hits Rossendale

The Leader of the Council, Councillor Alyson Barnes has praised residents, emergency services, staff and volunteers for their efforts after heavy wind and rain hit the borough.

There were a number of flooding incidents as bad weather battered the borough. A major incident was declared across Lancashire.

Councillor Barnes said:

It’s been a tough weekend for people and the weather has caused a lot of disruption.

Applications open for community fund

The latest round of the Rossendale Community Fund is open for applications and local organisations are invited to apply before the deadline of Monday, February 17.

The Rossendale Community Fund was created by Rossendale Council in partnership with the Community Foundation for Lancashire to offer grants to support projects that help families and children and young people engage in community activities and learning.

Further statement on budget setting

Plans for next year’s budget are to be presented to members of the overview and scrutiny as the Council continues its budget setting process.

Over the last few years, the Council has been hit by significant cuts to its central government grants.

It has meant the Council has had to generate additional income locally, mainly through increased business rates and Council tax revenue.

New neighbourhood forum request

The Council has received an application to establish a neighbourhood forum for Bacup and Stacksteads.

Prior to formalising this, we are required to both publicise the request and invite comments about whether this group should be able to prepare the neighbourhood plan and if the boundary being proposed for the neighbourhood area is correct.

CCTV upgrade for Rossendale

A new upgraded CCTV system is in operation across Rossendale.

A total of 19 new cameras are now in place in Haslingden, Rawtenstall and Bacup. These are mainly in the town centres and are directly linked to the central CCTV Hub for Lancashire.

The upgrade includes all new HD cameras, which provide much better quality footage, which are all networked and connected to the CCTV hub, which allows them to be monitored 24 hours a day, a facility not previously available for Rossendale.

Christmas tree recycling boost for borough

A total of 250 real Christmas trees have been donated to Rossendale Council for recycling.

Environmental officers have been busy disposing of and recycling the trees following the offer to collect the real trees after the festive season for just £5.

The trees are being shredded and the organic material will be used for recycling.

New breakfast club in Bacup launches

A new breakfast club and drop in has been launched to engage and assist residents from the Bacup area to make a difference to their lives.
The Brew and Breakfast Club, based at Trinity Baptist Church on Market Street, Bacup, will be open every Thursday from 10-noon.

It is being organised by Rossendale Works and Rossendale Futures, employability projects set up by Rossendale Council and Active Lancashire and the Department of Work of Pensions

At the first meeting, partner agencies led round table discussions to consider local issues and ways the new club could try to tackle them.

Council Leader marks Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place today and is a chance for people across the world to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, the millions of people killed under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in CambodiaRwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Marking the day, Council leader Alyson Barnes said:

Today we pay tribute to all the victims of the murderous Nazi regime, where all the institutions of state were geared towards the extermination of Jewish men, women and children and other deemed unworthy of life.
