Vital homes for families in need being developed in Rossendale.

Rossendale Borough Council is buying, repairing and refurbishing three empty properties to be used as affordable supported temporary accommodation.

There is currently no temporary supported accommodation suitable for families in the borough except for one house that the council owns, and there is need for more homes.

These will be used for families who are temporarily homeless due to various circumstances including domestic violence, family breakdown or a negative change in finances.

Rossendale Council announces new Chief Executive

Following a rigorous selection process, a new Chief Executive of Rossendale Council has been appointed.

The appointment of Neil Shaw, currently Strategic Director at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, was approved by councillors at last night’s Full Council.

Neil has held senior roles in local government across the country. He also spent several years as an Senior Advisor and Programme Manager at the Local Government Association.

Community Awards nominations closing soon

There’s not long left to show local heroes some love as Rossendale Council’s Community Awards’ nominations close this week.

The new awards scheme aims to recognise those individuals and groups whose efforts have made a big impact in their local community.

Whether it’s a sports coach who gives up their evenings and weekends, someone special who lends a hand at a local charity, or a group that makes a real difference to where people live they can all still be nominated until Friday, September 27.

A new play area is coming to Rising Bridge thanks to a funding boost

The project will involve new play equipment for children aged 0-16 including a zip-wire, new safety surfacing, drainage for the play area and a football pitch and a picnic area, to replace the old and worn play equipment. New pathways will be installed meaning that the Play Area will be accessible to all.

New jobs created as major firm moves to Rossendale

A major manufacturing firm is relocating to Rossendale in a multi-million pound move, that will create new jobs, after receiving help from Rossendale Council.

Melba Swintex is in the process of moving into a semi-derelict, vacant site in Stubbins which it is renovating and refurbishing with over £5m of investment.

The Council has worked with the company through its Invest in Rossendale programme, which has helped them benefit from NNDR business rates relief.

Statement on Haslingden Cemetery

Council delight at successful Bacup bid

Bacup is to benefit from £1.1m to help restore and repurpose some of the town’s historic buildings including the former Regal Cinema.

In July, the Council applied to Historic England’s High Streets Historic Action Zone funds to revive 29 buildings in the town and also establish a Heritage Action Zone.
Today (Saturday, September 14), Historic England announced Bacup’s bid had been successful.

Statement on application to extend vehicle operations licence at Haslingden Cemetery

We have had a number of concerned residents contact us about concerns about this application and we are aware there has been much discussion on social media.

We wanted to reassure residents and cemetery visitors what the plans actually were so have released the following statement from our Head of Operations, Tony Watson:

“We are currently going through the process of getting permission from the Traffic Commissioner to extend our vehicle operating licence at Haslingden Cemetery.
