Over the last few days and following our latest update, the Council has received a number of questions from residents. We have released the following statement addressing some of the points:
There has been a lot of debate about the borrowing to help fund this multi-million pound scheme, much of it inaccurate especially around financial information.

A developer’s prompt action in complying with an enforcement notice has been welcomed by Rossendale Council.
In November, the Council issued a notice to Heron Homes which is converting a former church in Edenfield to apartments.
A condition of the planning application being approved was for the developer to retain the stained glass windows at the front of the church.

New visuals have been released as part of the submission of a planning application outlining the Whitaker’s expansion plans.
If the application is approved, the scheme will double the size of the museum, gallery, events and restaurant space, converting the current underused stables and barn area. The proposals also include an extensive list of community engagement activities, events and workshop space
The Council has been working closely with the Whitaker community interest company on the scheme since the company was successful in securing an initial £100,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which the Council match funded, for a first stage development grant.

Lancashire has been selected as one of a number of areas to take part in a national pilot allowing councils including Rossendale to retain 75 per cent of growth in business rates.
Rossendale Council welcomed the news.
Andrew Walmsley, Portfolio Holder for Resources, said:
“Although only for 2019/20, this is good news for us as it will help provide a bit more financial stability for the councils involved.

Men and women boxers joined up to support the White Ribbon Campaign.
A partnership between Rossendale Leisure Trust and Rossendale Borough Council promoted the campaign at local boxing clubs – Community Boxing Club in Rawtenstall, Pioneer Gym in Bacup and Boxing Bootcamp in Haslingden.
The core of the national White Ribbon campaign is ending violence against women and those signing up take the pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about men’s violence against women and girls.

Business leaders gave their backing to a bid to reinstate a commuter rail link between Rossendale, Manchester, Rochdale and beyond.
At the meeting of the East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce (ELCC) Rossendale Business Leaders at AG6 in Rawtenstall, an update on the progress made by Rossendale Council and its partners was given.

Following last night’s [Wednesday, December 12] full Council meeting, Councillor Alyson Barnes, leader of the Council, released an update on Spinning Point:
In the summer, the Council agreed in principle our vision for Spinning Point phase two. Since then, members from all political parties have been looking in detail at the proposals to make sure what we were proposing was actually deliverable and was backed by firm evidence.

Ambitious new plans to boost Rossendale’s economy have been unveiled as Rossendale Council announces its new economic development strategy.
The strategy is designed to create new jobs, bring in investment, improve transport links, deliver big projects and develop the borough’s town centres.
What the strategy means for Rossendale:
The new strategy is the culmination of hard work across the borough and beyond to bring about sustainable economic growth, generate opportunities for investment and create new jobs locally.

Applications for community grants are now open at Rossendale Council.
There is a closing date of Monday, 7th January 2019. Grants will be available to cover the 3 financial years – 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22.
The allocation of up to £62,000 funding for Rossendale Council Grants and Community Partnership Grants was approved by the Council’s Cabinet on 28th November.
