Former town hall opens its doors following restoration

People can have a look round the renovated Rawtenstall Town Hall.

The RTB Partnership is inviting members of the public to take a free tour of the building before it is handed over to housing provider Together Housing.

After lying empty for more than ten years, the former town hall has been restored to create modern office space in a stunning historic setting.

First World War 100th anniversary concert

People can say “thank you” to the First World War generation at Rossendale Council’s annual Festival of Remembrance Concert.

The event takes place at St Peter’s Church, Haslingden, at 4pm on November 4. It will feature Haslingden Concert Band and the Veterans In Communities Singing Group.

The Mayor of Rossendale, Councillor Ann Kenyon, will attend.

Have your say on NHS policies

NHS East Lancashire and NHS Blackburn with Darwen Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are working in partnership with the other six CCGs in Lancashire and South Cumbria to review clinical policies across the region.

The eight CCGs across Lancashire and South Cumbria have all agreed that there is a need to review their policies to: ensure a consistent and fair approach across the region; update current policies in accordance with National Guidelines and best clinical practice and to make sure it is using its limited resources to maximum effect.

Council publishes report on excess winter deaths

The council has published a report on excess winter deaths in the borough.

It has found that the rate of excess winter deaths is not significantly higher than that across England but recommends closer partnership working to tackle the issue.

A group of five Rossendale councillors was convened earlier this year to look into the issue.

Former Dragons’ Den star launches Invest in Rossendale

A dragon returned to his roots to breathe fire into a new initiative to support, promote and boost businesses in Rossendale.

The Rossendale Council-led scheme Invest in Rossendale was launched at The Riverside in Whitworth by Bacup-born Piers Linney.

An audience of 180 people listened intently as Piers outlined his career from failing his 11-plus to succeeding as a millionaire investor.

Help to improve your local community

People are being urged to have their say on improving their neighbourhoods.

Rossendale’s four community partnerships for Bacup, Haslingden, Rawtenstall and Whitworth are producing community action plans for their local areas.

Each plan will have six themes: community safety, environment, leisure, health and wellbeing, transport and the local economy.

The partnerships have begun getting people to tell them what they like about their neighbourhoods, what needs to change and how these changes could take place.

Adrian is on his marks for the Great North Run

A council worker is taking on the world’s largest half marathon in aid of charity.

Adrian Smith, principal planning officer for Rossendale Council, we be among the 57,000 runners taking part in the Great North Run on Sunday (September 9).

He is raising money for Open Doors which supports Christians around the world who have been persecuted for their faith, providing vital aid and support to displaced families.

Rushcart celebration brings out the crowds

The sun shone on the crowds at the annual Whitworth rushcart celebration.

The traditional procession led by the rushcart featured numerous morris dance troupes, including the famous Britannia Coconutters and the Whitworth Morris Men.

Whitworth’s rushcart history goes back hundreds of years to when rushes were taken to church on a cart.

Council statement on land behind Futures Park

As a landowner we take seriously our responsibility to manage our land safely.

It is not unusual to find some contamination on previously developed sites such as this. Any potential issues identified in consultants’ reports would need to be addressed as part of a remediation strategy when the site is developed, particularly through the planning application process.

Visit to Stubbins paper mill

Rossendale Council’s economic development manager recently visited Essity paper mill in Stubbins.

Guy Darragh toured the historic mill and found out more about the company’s ongoing investment at the Stubbins Lane site.

Essity mill manager John Kirwin said:

There’s a lot of work going on at the mill. When Mr Darragh contacted us to ask about our future plans, I was very happy to invite him to see the investments we are making in upgrading our facilities as we look ahead to the future for the mill.
