Council statement regarding Haslingden fire

Rossendale Council is working with Lancashire County Council, Lancashire Police and other agencies following a fire at the former FAB Furniture Shop at the end of Beaconsfield Street in Haslingden.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue were called to the building at 10.45pm.

Five properties had to be vacated while firefighters tackled the blaze, there were no injuries.

Help take Lancashire around the world

People in Rossendale are being encouraged to run, hop, skip, bounce, cycle, skate, swim or even cartwheel for a mile on Friday (May 18).

The aim is to get at least 24,901 people in Lancashire to take part in Your Mile Your Way challenge – and complete the amount of miles it would take to travel around the world.

Ramadan is an Islamic holy month where Muslims all over the world take part in fasting. This year Ramadan will be starting around 16 May, which means a longer period from dawn until dusk.

Doctors at NHS East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are encouraging local residents to stay safe and well during this period.

People invited to have their say on the future of Waterside Mill

Proposals are being unveiled to transform a derelict spinning mill which was ravaged by fire.

People can have their say on initial plans to restore and convert Waterside Mill in Bacup into apartments and business premises at a public consultation on May 17.

Rossendale Council has been working with Valley Heritage to find a sustainable solution for the 179-year-old building which has fallen into a severe state of disrepair since a major fire in 2003.

Neighbourhood Forum approved

Rossendale Council has approved the designation of Edenfield Community Neighbourhood Forum.

This means that the forum will be able to prepare a neighbourhood plan, a planning document created by local people to guide and shape the development and use of land in a set area.

Neighbourhood plans were introduced by the Localism Act which aims to give people and communities more say in decisions which affect them.

Be stroke aware during May

People are being urged to think FAST to help limit the damage caused by a stroke.

Someone in the UK has a stroke every five minutes – that’s 100,000 people a year who could be left with serious long-term health problems or even die.

But acting quickly could help limit the damage which is why NHS East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is urging people to know the signs to look for during Action on Stroke Month.

Recognising innovative work to tackle loneliness

An awards ceremony will celebrate the outstanding work of groups and individuals to tackle loneliness and isolation in the borough.

Nominations are sought for the council’s Living Well Living Better Awards which will be held in June.

Rossendale was one of the local authorities chosen by the Government in 2016 to receive funding to pilot new ways of improving the health and wellbeing of local communities.

Grants available to help keep your home warm next winter

The weather may be turning warmer, but if your home has been cold over the winter or your heating bills have been sky high, now might be the time to apply for an Affordable Warmth Grant.

Rossendale Borough Council is working in partnership with MSV Homecare and Repair (formerly St Vincent’s) to offer the grants.
