Council wins prestigious award

Rossendale Council’s Planning Team has won a top regional award for its practice.

The team won the Best Practice Award at the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) North West Regional Awards for Planning Excellence 2017 for its work on the new McDonalds at Rawtenstall.

A new award category was created for this scheme and the judges confirmed that the scheme was given special status because it demonstrated how a small local planning authority can achieve an excellent outcome in dealing with an application from a world famous company.

Trio get ready for marathon bake-a-thon

Three friends have found the perfect recipe to raise money for charity, by staging a 24 hour bake-a-thon.

Abigail Wrench, Becca Astin and Kirsty Lauder are holding the marathon cake making session at Abigail’s Burnley home in aid of Pendleside, Hospice.

The group plan to stream the 24 hour bake-a-thon live on Youtube and are also inviting people to drop by for a cuppa and a cake in aid of the charity.

Blog: Council worker who raised money for displaced families in Iraq

Adrian Smith, a father-of-three from Bacup, ran a marathon in the heat of the Middle East in May to support families affected by war and persecution in the Middle East.

Adrian, 56, the principal planning officer for Rossendale Borough Council had previously visited Iraq and saw for himself the suffering faced by families following the invasion of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS), which forced tens of thousands to flee their homes.

Local residents will soon be able to access Rossendale Council’s new and improved website.

The new site, which will go live on Wednesday August 9, features a re-jigged layout – with an A-Z of services – that makes it quicker and easier for residents to access the information they need.

Council delighted at lottery windfall for heritage project

Community Assets Standing Tall (CAST) has been awarded £49,400 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to undertake a two year listing project of Rossendale Heritage assets.

Dog show star attraction at Whitworth fun day

There was a canine theme at Whitworth’s 8th annual family fun day.

The event, on Sunday July 9, saw residents enjoying a variety of entertainment, competitions and refreshments in the glorious sunshine.

Organised by the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee volunteers, attractions on the Riverside car park included ten fun dog show categories with prizes for the scruffiest mutt, ‘waggiest tail’, best fancy dress, best biscuit catcher, best rescue dog and more.

Council campaign invites acts of kindness

Rossendale residents are being invited to perform ‘acts of kindness’ to help tackle loneliness and social isolation.

The Council is launching its Acts of Kindness campaign – through its Living Well, Living Better project – on Monday, July 24.

As part of the campaign, people are encouraged to perform one act of kindness in their local community that might help others feel less lonely or socially isolated, or just make someone’s day by offering to help in some way.

Northern Grip hailed a success

Bacup hosted the Northern Grip over the weekend (July 7,8 and 9). Hundreds of people gathered for the festival.

Councillor Andy MacNae, Portfolio holder for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, visited the festival and praised what he saw. He said:

“I was delighted to see the Northern Grip go so well. There was a buzz around Bacup and the organisers have put on a superb festival which had something for everyone not just serious mountain bikers.
