Rossendale Borough Council (RBC) and Rossendale Leisure Trust (RLT) have announced that Whitworth Leisure Centre will close in July.
The current cost-of-living crisis has seen councils across the UK face inflationary pressures and rising demand across all services. As higher proportions of council budgets are absorbed by statutory and frontline services, councils’ ability to maintain provision in sport and leisure has come under increasing under pressure.

Whitworth Community Partnership has since the beginning of 2022, awarded grants to three local groups allowing them to purchase goods they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.
Women of Whitworth (WoW) received £156, Whitworth in Bloom received £250, and The Ashcroft received £250.
The Whitworth Partnership which is managed by Rossendale Council and is made up of organisations such as Whitworth Town Council, Police, local residents and various community groups – can give grants of between £150 and £250 to groups that provide added value to residents of the borough.

Rossendale is set to glitter this Christmas as festive lights turn on across the borough.
Fun performances, parades and tasty food will entertain the crowds before the lights turn on to mark the official start of Christmas.
Whitworth is first to light up on Sunday, November 24th at the Civic Hall at 6pm.

There is still time to have your say on the plan which will guide the borough’s development over the next 15 years.
Rossendale Council has published its draft local plan which guides how the borough will achieve its targets for housing, employment sites and facilities over the next few years.
It will also guide where new housing and employment will be located as well as where land should be protected.

Following the announcement that work is to begin to redevelop Albert Mill on Albert Street and demolish the building, ward Councillor Sean Serridge said: “I’m delighted we are seeing progress on this site. Over the weekend from 3rd March to 5th March areas all over Great Britain have been meeting to ‘spring clean’ their towns and Whitworth is no exception.
Thanks to the work of an exceptional group of volunteers ‘Keep Whitworth Tidy’, this weekend another 28 bags of rubbish were removed from local streets and public areas by sixteen volunteers.

On Saturday 8 April 2017, the Mayor of Whitworth, Councillor Madeline De Souza, will be hosting the first ever annual celebration and awards evening.
This year, this event will take the place of the Civic Dinner and aim to celebrate all we have to offer in Whitworth culminating in the presentation of some very special awards.

Rossendale residents and representatives of local community groups are invited to attend their local Neighbourhood Forum meeting to find out more about local services and activities and events in their area.
There are four Neighbourhood Forums in Rossendale covering Haslingden, Rawtenstall, Bacup and Whitworth. The Forums, which are open to all local residents, are informal community meetings to allow networking and information sharing and any agreed action points.

Rossendale Borough Council and the Police are appealing for information after stone was pinched from Whitworth Memorial Gardens on Sunday 3rd of July 2016.
Around 45 stones were taken by thieves from the gardens and the Council is now having to look at replacing the costly stone.
Rossendale Council’s Head of Operations, Paul McHenry, said;
“This is a terrible crime, not only has it left the area looking a mess for the community it is also costly to replace such stone from the public purse.”
