Rossendale Council working with the partner organisations involved with the Bacup 2040 Board have successfully secured funding from the government’s High Street Heritage Action Zone to enhance historic buildings and features in the centre of Bacup https://www.rossendalenews.org.uk/delight-over-bacup-funding-success/ .
The four year project which will run from 2020-2024 includes an element of funding to enhance the centrepiece coronation fountain with the restoration of the water feature. As this is located on a roundabout near to the highway, it is necessary to obtain the consent of Lancashire County Council as highways authority, which has not been granted. Further discussions with Lancashire County Council are ongoing.
The issue will be discussed with partners in the coming months at the Heritage Action Zone Board which includes the friends of the coronation fountain group. It is hoped that an acceptable way forward can be found to the water restoration and their aspiration for an additional tier which was part of the original design.
As an interim measure, permission has been granted to place flowers back into the fountain bowl area to bring colour back to the feature and this will not prevent future water restoration.
