Taxi driver caught without proper Council licence

A taxi driver has been fined £772 for driving a taxi without a working licence.

Mohammad Iqbal (52), of Burnley Road, Todmorden, was caught driving his vehicle and attempting to ply for hire on South Street, Bacup.

His licence had been revoked in September 2018 as he had previously been disqualified from driving but had failed to inform the licencing department at Rossendale Borough Council, leaving the information off his application form.

Taxi driver fined for smoking in vehicle

A taxi driver who was caught smoking in his vehicle in Waterfoot has been fined £100 and ordered to pay £150 costs by magistrates.

Adam Sharif Judge, 24, was spotted smoking in the driver’s seat of his hackney carriage in Bacup Road by licensing enforcement officers from Rossendale Council on February 14 this year.

Our policies have always been based on national guidelines and the issues raised here – which are now more than two years old – have previously been thoroughly investigated and were unfounded.

Taxi Proposals Approved at Licensing Committee

Last night Rossendale Borough Councillors approved the recommended changes to the Council’s Taxi Licensing Policies following recent consultation.

The changes are being brought in by the Council in order to ensure we maintain the highest standards in public safety and to ensure that robust policies are in place providing transparent guidance to applicants, existing licence holders and all other stakeholders.

Rossendale Council Statement on Industrial Action by the Local Taxi Trade

Rossendale Council has now had confirmation of the strike by the taxi trade, after circulating rumours that they intended to go on strike. They have notified us that the strike is a withdrawal of service and takes place with immediate effect on the morning of Wednesday 9th November 2016, however it is still unclear for how long the strike will last.

Updated Taxi Strike Statement

Rossendale Council Officers have met with representatives of the local Taxi Trade this morning and listened to their current concerns following the demonstration of around 30-40 drivers.

We have successfully resolved some issues and have set up a workshop meeting with representatives from the trade to discuss the consultation in more detail.

Rossendale Taxi Procedure Update

Rossendale Council has recently taken a variety of steps to make changes to the Hackney Carriage/Private Hire application process and address the number of Rossendale licensed drivers and vehicles working in other areas.

Firstly, we have implemented a Hackney Carriage Intended ‘Use’ policy (adopted at 24th February 2016 Council).  Any applications for a new hackney carriage vehicle licence where there is no intention to use the vehicle predominantly in the Borough of Rossendale are refused.

Rossendale Council in Operation Considerate

Rossendale Borough Council recently conducted Operation Considerate in Manchester City Centre in April.

Working alongside Greater Manchester Police we stopped and checked 11 Rossendale licensed vehicles.

Of these vehicles, 3 were suspended, 2 were given defect notices and 3 were given written warning on smoking and children in the front seat.

Rossendale and Leeds Joint Enforcement Success

Rossendale Borough Council and Leeds City Council team up to conduct joint enforcement activity on Taxis in Leeds city centre.

Enforcement Teams from Rossendale and Leeds Councils worked from 20:00 – 04:30 hours on Friday 20 May 2016 to stop and check taxis.

6 Rossendale licensed vehicles were stopped and dealt with.
