A housing development on the site of a former mill in Cowpe has been crowned the best in the region.

Kearns Village was named the best small new housing development at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) North West Building Excellence Awards.

More than 600 people attended the ceremony to recognise technical excellence in building at Lancashire Country Cricket Club.

Kearns Village is on the former site of Kearns of Waterfoot, a mill dating from 1875. Developer Skipton Properties retained look and feel of the mill by designing its homes in a courtyard formation and using natural stone.

The development will now represent the borough at the LABC Grand Finals in London in November.

The LABC is a not for profit organisation offering impartial advice and support on building regulations and other crucial services for housing developers.

Its chief executive Paul Everall said: “The awards are an opportunity for us to celebrate some of the very best in construction in England and Wales, recognising the high level of quality and skill we can and do reach in the UK.”
