Transformation of the Whitaker takes a step forward

An exciting £1.9million National Lottery-funded transformation of The Whitaker in Rawtenstall will begin in June after local firm B&E Boys was awarded the contract.

The project which includes converting the former barn and stables is being delivered by Rossendale Borough Council in partnership with the Whitaker CIC and is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund with matched funding of £189,950 from the council.

Work to transform major major tourist attraction to start soon

A contractor will be appointed in the New Year to begin work on the £1.9million transformation of one of Rossendale’s major tourist attractions.

Rossendale Council in partnership with The Whitaker, in Rawtenstall, secured Heritage Lottery Funding in the summer to convert the former barn and stables; the council also provided matched funding of £189,950.

Council earmarks two sites for parks and cemeteries team

Rossendale Council have identified two sites to locate the parks and cemeteries team.

The team needed to find a new depot to operate from as they are due to be displaced by works to improve the Whitaker.

The Council has identified a current depot at Tup Bridge and to establish a small scale operating centre at Marl Pits.

New life is to be breathed into buildings at one of Rossendale’s iconic tourism locations thanks to a £1.7million National Lottery Heritage Fund grant.

Rossendale Borough Council worked in partnership with The Whitaker, in Rawtenstall, to secure the National Lottery Heritage Fund award to convert the former barn and stables and a further £189,950 of matched funding was provided by the council.

Exciting new plans to expand an award-winning cultural venue have been unveiled

New visuals have been released as part of the submission of a planning application outlining the Whitaker’s expansion plans.

If the application is approved, the scheme will double the size of the museum, gallery, events and restaurant space, converting the current underused stables and barn area. The proposals also include an extensive list of community engagement activities, events and workshop space

The Council has been working closely with the Whitaker community interest company on the scheme since the company was successful in securing an initial £100,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which the Council match funded, for a first stage development grant.
