A special walking summit is being held to let people give their views on how to boost walking activities in Rossendale.

Rossendale’s Together an Active Future project is looking at how to encourage a more active community and want your input on making it easier for people.

It is hosting a walking summit on Wednesday, February 27th at The Riverside in Whitworth, OL12 8DP.

Christmas lights bring festive sparkle to Rossendale

Rossendale is set to glitter this Christmas as festive lights turn on across the borough.

Fun performances, parades and tasty food will entertain the crowds before the lights turn on to mark the official start of Christmas.

Whitworth is first to light up on Sunday, November 24th at the Civic Hall at 6pm.

Community comes together for Remembrance Services

People gathered all over Rossendale to pay their respects to those who lost their lives in both World Wars and other conflicts.

Moving services and parades took place all over the borough as people paid their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

On Remembrance Sunday, November 19th, Rawtenstall held the traditional parade in the Town Square before heading to St Mary’s Church for a service.

It’s time to show local heroes some love as Rossendale Council’s Community Awards open for nominations.

The new awards scheme aims to recognise those individuals and groups whose efforts have made a big impact in their local community.

Whether it’s a sports coach who gives up their evenings and weekends, someone special who lends a hand at a local charity, or a group that makes a real difference to where people live – they can all be nominated now.

Rushcart celebration brings out the crowds

The sun shone on the crowds at the annual Whitworth rushcart celebration.

The traditional procession led by the rushcart featured numerous morris dance troupes, including the famous Britannia Coconutters and the Whitworth Morris Men.

Whitworth’s rushcart history goes back hundreds of years to when rushes were taken to church on a cart.

Make a date for Whitworth’s rushcart celebration

Whitworth’s traditional rushcart celebration will take place on September 2.

The annual procession – one of only four still held in the UK – starts at Whitworth Museum, North Street, at 1pm.

It will feature traditional morris dance troupes including the famous Britannia Coconutters and the Whitworth Morris Men.

The procession led by the rushcart will travel along Market Street before arriving at The Riverside at approximately 1.20pm.

Hundreds turn out to New Year’s Day duck race

Hundreds of people braved the weather to enjoy Whitworth’s annual Duck Race on New Year’s Day.

A popular event in the Whitworth calendar, the ducks took to the water at the overflow of Cowm Reservoir on Tong End in the cold and blustery conditions.  In total over 1,300 ducks were sponsored and around 400 people turned out on the day in this growing event.

Whitworth takes part in the Great British Spring Clean

Over the weekend from 3rd March to 5th March areas all over Great Britain have been meeting to ‘spring clean’ their towns and Whitworth is no exception. 

Thanks to the work of an exceptional group of volunteers ‘Keep Whitworth Tidy’, this weekend another 28 bags of rubbish were removed from local streets and public areas by sixteen volunteers.

Whitworth Town Council hosts the 2017 Mayor’s Annual Celebration and Awards!

On Saturday 8 April 2017, the Mayor of Whitworth, Councillor Madeline De Souza, will be hosting the first ever annual celebration and awards evening. 

This year, this event will take the place of the Civic Dinner and aim to celebrate all we have to offer in Whitworth culminating in the presentation of some very special awards.
