Over the weekend from 3rd March to 5th March areas all over Great Britain have been meeting to ‘spring clean’ their towns and Whitworth is no exception.
Thanks to the work of an exceptional group of volunteers ‘Keep Whitworth Tidy’, this weekend another 28 bags of rubbish were removed from local streets and public areas by sixteen volunteers. It really is amazing what difference can be made in just one hour!
Litter Picks took place in two locations in Whitworth. Six bags of litter were collected from around Cowm reservoir and 22 bags (plus bikes, wood, plants and other general items) were collected from the area around Hall Street. In addition to the litter pick, a volunteer started an initiative to raise the awareness of dog fouling, particularly around the reservoir. She left lots of free dog poo bags with a note offering people to take and use them in order to keep the place clean and tidy.
If every adult in Whitworth picked up just one piece of litter and put it in a bin, that would be 4000 pieces of rubbish disposed of. Imagine if everyone picked up at least one piece of litter every day for the next year?
Organised picks are usually held monthly on a Sunday morning from 10am until 11am, equipment is provided and all are welcome. For more information about the next litter pick dates join the facebook group ‘Keep Whitworth Tidy’ or keep an eye on www.whitworth.gov.uk.
